The use of aluminium in electronics

Annie Everill

Annie Everill

When it comes to electronics and devices, people usually concentrate on the latest models or how fast they are but not necessarily what goes into them. Aluminium is a versatile metal with a high selection of applications, and in more recent years, it has taken on a central role in producing electronic products.

From smartphones to keyboards, this lightweight and corrosion-resistant material has become one of the main materials used in modern electrics whilst also being used around the home and in other industries such as aerospace and construction.

Why aluminium is good for electronics

Lightweight: Most electronics are used daily, with products such as mobiles being a necessity for everyday communication, work or research. This means the construction of these things must be lightweight and easy to use. This characteristic has also enabled manufacturers to make thin devices that are easy to hold and smaller in size.

Durable: Similarly, as electronics are used daily, this also means they must have a high level of durability and strength, something which aluminium offers.

Cost-effective: Aluminium often offers the best value as well as a good opportunity for mass production, design elements and additional features to be added.

Recycling: It’s much more efficient to recycle aluminium compared to other materials as it only uses 5% of the energy. As a result, it’s a better option for sustainability and many companies and brands are concentrating on this element. Modern buyers also want to know that the products they purchase aren’t harming the environment and meet certain standards.

Corrosion resistance: Aluminium forms a natural oxide layer meaning it will never rust or corrode, an essential feature when it comes to electrics and handheld devices. Any metal, including aluminium, could corrode when exposed to harsh conditions but aluminium will last longer than just about any other alloy and withstand many harsh environments.
